Per Animal Health Emergency Order 1-AHO-05, the State of Massachusetts requires that all dogs entering the state be quarantined for a minimum of 48 hours, regardless of age, health, or vaccination status. This is a state-mandated requirement and applies to all incoming dogs—no exceptions.

At Paws In Your Hands Rescue, we coordinate quarantine in compliance with this regulation. We currently work with state-approved facilities located in Westport, MA and Medfield, MA. If your adopted dog is being transported into Massachusetts, PIYHR will schedule the quarantine with your availability in mind. In some cases, you may be responsible for transporting the dog to the quarantine facility.

Once the 48-hour quarantine is complete, and your dog passes the mandatory veterinary check, you will be cleared to pick your new dog up directly from the facility. Please note that dogs will not be released without passing this final vet check.

In the rare case that your dog does not pass the release exam, PIYHR will notify you right away. Any additional veterinary care or extended boarding costs will be the adopter’s responsibility until the dog is approved for release. We will work closely with you to keep you informed and updated every step of the way.

Quarantine Pick-Up & Additional Info

When it’s time to pick up your dog from the quarantine facility, a PIYHR representative may not be on-site. You will be provided with a copy of your dog’s vetting paperwork at pick-up (this information is also emailed to you at the time of adoption).

If you have any concerns about your dog’s health at the time of pick-up, please contact PIYHR immediately and before leaving the facility.

If you are unable to pick up your dog immediately following the completion of quarantine and veterinary clearance, you will be responsible for any additional boarding fees, as determined by the quarantine facility. Alternatively, please reach out to us at pawsinyourhandsrescue@gmail.com to make other arrangements. We ask that you notify us as soon as possible to avoid delays in your dog’s release.

At this time, there is no additional quarantine fee for Massachusetts adopters. Quarantine costs (typically $155–$170 per dog) are currently covered by ARNE and already included in your adoption fee.
